One-on-One Counseling

  • In addition to Darden’s robust career resource offerings, you will have two primary contacts for one-on-one career advising: a professional career advisor and a CDC Second Year student career coach who recently went through the internship search process. Both contacts will be instrumental in your job search.

    Professional Career Advisors

As a Darden student, you will receive one-on-one advising from an industry-experienced career advisor on the strategies and mechanics of the job search process. Career advisors focus on industry and functional areas (including consulting, entrepreneurship, finance, marketing and general management), and have extensive corporate experience to draw upon. From the beginning of your First Year, you will work with your career advisor in group career education workshops and individual advising sessions. They will be an integral resource throughout your two years at Darden.

    CDC Second Year Coaches

In addition to working with an experienced career advisor, all First Year students are matched with a Career Development Center (CDC) Second Year coach, a peer with experience in the internship search process in your area of interest. CDC Second Year coaches have experience in one of the following industry or job function categories:

    • Consulting
    • Corporate Finance
    • Entrepreneurship and Venture Capital
    • General Management
    • Investment Banking
    • Investment Management
    • Marketing
    • Mission-Driven
    • Sales and Trading
    • Technology

    Benefits for First Year Students

CDC Second Year coaches work with First Year students to identify their strengths, career goals and interests and to develop a plan to get a summer internship. Meetings usually take place every two weeks, but this can occur more or less frequently, depending on the needs of the students. This relationship provides First Year students with:

    • An accessible, informed contact who has recent experience going through the same process and is willing and able to assist in all aspects of the career search
    • Résumé and cover letter advice and editing
    • Industry knowledge
    • Information and strategies for the recruiting process
    • Networking advice
    • Mock interviews including common questions, industry-specific format and feedback

    Benefits for Second Year Students

The CDC Second Year Coach program is a great leadership opportunity for Darden students. At the end of the First Year, students can apply to be a part of the 3-credit CDC Second Year Coach course, which is designed to prepare students to be successful leaders and mentors while providing career counseling and direction to several First Year students.

CDC Second Year coaches will study, practice and reflect upon all aspects of coaching, mentoring and counseling that fall within the scope of managerial responsibilities common to MBAs at various leadership levels. Skills learned and practiced include but are not limited to:

    • Evaluating career objectives as they relate to various career paths and goals
    • Targeting skills and experiences to various job environments
    • Giving feedback to professionals from a wide variety of backgrounds
    • Communicating and presenting job search ideas in an effective and timely manner
    • Influencing others to change, grow and excel in the job search process
    • Reviewing résumés and cover letters for clarity and relevance
    • Conducting mock interviews and helping with interview preparation
    • Leading small groups through specific career management topics
    • Managing time to meet counseling objectives
    • Presenting and assisting with career management sessions and workshops
