• The Darden School of Business and China Europe International Business School (CEIBS) hosted the eighth CEIBS Private Wealth Investment Forum on Saturday 8 April in Shanghai. Through partnership with CEIBS, the conference expanded the Darden School’s annual Shanghai Investing Summit. At the forum, thought leaders from the schools and industry experts led discussions centered around investment from the CEO’s perspective. The forum was sponsored by Darden’s Richard A. Mayo Center for Asset Management and the CEIBS Shoushan Centre for Wealth Management.

  • CEIBS Partners With Darden to Discuss Investment From the CEO’s Perspective

    As the economic impact of unconventional monetary policy and the new administration in the United States ripples around the world, this forum provided an opportunity to learn how investors, economists and executives are thinking about positioning portfolios to best take advantage of new opportunities and to mitigate risk. Understanding the investing landscape, both in China and around the world, and how different markets affect one another remains critical. This forum brought together leading executives and investors to discuss insights on future opportunities.

    Francisco A. Aristeguieta
    CEO, Asia Pacific, Citigroup Asia

    Francisco Aristeguieta is the CEO of Citigroup Asia and is responsible for all businesses in the region's 16 markets, which account for almost 30 percent of Citigroup's global earnings. In addition to Asia, Aristeguieta is also responsible for consumer operations in the U.K., Russia, Poland and the United Arab Emirates.

    Before assuming this role in June 2015, he served as CEO of Latin America, leading a three-year repositioning effort in the region for the 23 countries where Citi is currently present. Prior to that, he was Citi Transaction Services (CTS) head for Latin America and Mexico, managing the Institutional Clients Group's core product set: cash management, trade, custody, corresponding banking and export agency finance. He was a member of the Banco Nacional de Mexico (Banamex) executive committee and of the CTS Global executive committee. Aristeguieta has also served as CEO for the Andean Region Cluster of countries (Venezuela, Colombia, Peru, Ecuador and Bolivia) and Colombia directly, following stints as CEO for Citi Venezuela and, before that, Ecuador.

    Aristeguieta reports to Citigroup CEO Michael Corbat and is a member of the Citi’s operating committee. He is also a member of the board of Citigroup Foundation and Citi Ventures, and currently serves on the board of trustees of the Asia Society. He has also been a member of The Young Presidents Organization since 2003. In addition, he served as vice chairman and member of the board of directors of Banco de Chile, the largest financial group in Chile. He has been a member of several other boards, such as the Association of American Chambers of Commerce of Latin America; the Americas Society and Council of the Americas; Junior Achievement Americas; Banking Association of Ecuador, Colombia and Venezuela; American Chambers of Commerce of Ecuador, Colombia and Venezuela; and the Consejo de Empresas Americanas of Colombia. He was also chairman of Colombia's Board of Colfondos, the third-largest pension funds manager in that market.

    Aristeguieta joined Citigroup in 1994 as vice president and senior relationship manager for the corporate bank. In 1997, he became head of the corporate bank, financial institutions and public sector for Citi Venezuela. He earned the Senior Credit Officer designation in 2003, Level-II in 2008 and Level-I in 2011, representing the highest risk-approval business designation at Citi.

    Before joining Citi, Aristeguieta worked for Vestcor Partners, for which he covered debt capital markets for Venezuela, Colombia and Brazil. Prior to that, he worked for Petroleos de Venezuela's (PDVSA) project finance group.

    Aristeguieta holds an MBA from London's Brunel University, where he attended on a British Council and Petroleos de Venezuela scholarship. He also has a graduate degree in banking and finance and an undergraduate degree in business administration with a major in management, both from the Universidad Metropolitana in Caracas, Venezuela.

    Oliver Rui
    Professor of Finance and Accounting at CEIBS, Director of CEIBS Shoushan Center for Wealth Management 

    Dr. Oliver M. Rui is Professor of Finance and Accounting at CEIBS. He is also professionally designated as a Certified Financial Analyst (CFA) and Financial Risk Manager (FRM). Prior to joining CEIBS, Rui was a tenured professor at Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK). He has taught a variety of courses at both the graduate and undergraduate levels at CUHK, Tsinghua University, Shanghai National Institute of Accounting and Hong Kong Polytechnic University. He was the program director of the Executive Master of Professional Accountancy, which is a joint program between CUHK and Shanghai National Institute of Accounting. He was a deputy director of the Center for Institutions and Governance and a senior research fellow of Institute of Economics and Finance. Rui is also an award-winning teacher and researcher. He received the faculty teaching award at CUHK six years in a row from 2004 to 2009. He received the 2013 Research Excellence Award at CEIBS and was awarded the first CEIBS Medal for Research Excellence in 2015.

    He holds a bachelor’s degree in international economics from the Institute of International Relations in Beijing, a master’s degree in economics from Oklahoma State University, and an MBA in statistics and a Ph.D. in finance from the University of Houston.

    Dennis Yang
    Dale S. Coenen Free Enterprise Professor of Business Administration, Darden, and Academic Director, Darden Asia Initiative

    Dennis Yang is the Dale S. Coenen Free Enterprise Professor of Business Administration at the Darden School of Business. He has taught First Year residential MBA and Global Executive MBA classes on global economies and markets and is developing an elective course on China and Asia.

    Yang's research focuses primarily on economic development and growth, as well as labor economics, especially in the context of China and economic transition. His work has covered a wide range of topics including household behavior, education, savings, poverty and famine, long-term growth, China's population policies, wage structure, and income distribution. He has published in leading economics journals, such as American Economic Review, Journal of Political Economy, Economic Journal, Journal of Economic Perspectives, Journal of Monetary Economics and the Journal of Development Economics. He has also co-edited three books on economic reforms in China and served on the editorial boards of several international economics journals.

    Yang has held other positions worldwide. He is a senior research fellow at the Chinese University of Hong Kong, Peking University, Tsinghua University and the Institute for the Study of Labor (IZA) in Germany. He is also the president-elect of the Association for Comparative Economic Studies and holds the Chang Jiang Visiting Professorship at Shanghai Jiao Tong University in China. He has undertaken consulting work for international organizations such as the World Bank and The Conference Board as well as other leading multinational companies.

    A native of China, Yang obtained his undergraduate degree from UCLA and his Ph.D. in economics from the University of Chicago. Before joining Darden in 2012, he served on the economics faculty at Duke University, Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, and the Chinese University of Hong Kong.

    Han Xianwang
    Fund Manager and Chief Economist, China Universal Asset Management Co.

    Han Xianwang serves as fund manager of the universal balanced growth equity fund and chief economist of China Universal Asset Management. He joined China Universal Asset Management as research director of the investment research department in May 2007. With 17 years of experience in the securities industry, Han has served as an analyst, manager and equity research executive in the asset management department of Guotai Junan Securities, GTJA Allianz Funds and Ping An Asset Management Co.

    Wang Zhongmin
    Vice Chairman, National Council for Social Security Fund

    Wang Zhongmin became vice chairman of China’s National Council for Social Security Fund in 2004. He studied political economics at the Graduate School of Chinese Academy of Social Sciences and holds a Ph.D in economics.
